Tower Hamlets Mission

"Tower Hamlets Mission is a Christian Charity, committed to working with people suffering from alcohol and/or drug dependency, who are either homeless, in danger of becoming homeless or are receiving state benefits. Our aim is to enable them to break the cycle of chronic addiction definitively and to rebuild purposeful, stable lives through the provision of high quality, comprehensive residential therapy and rehabilitation."

The Pre-funded Scheme
Phase IV development

Tower Hamlets Mission receives an income from different sources including Care in the Community Funding, Resident's contributions, Supporting People and Housing Benefit. This income pays for the basic essentials and in order to provide the high quality care that we do, we raise extra income. We have a number of current appeals:

The Pre-funded and Therapeutic Support Scheme:

The Pre-funded & Therapeutic Support Scheme was set up to help those enter into recovery who cannot obtain funding. There are many reasons that this could be so including the limited funds available to Social Services, the past opportunities that the resident has already taken or the limited opportunity that some people have to get into 'rehab'.

Over the last 12 years, THM has raised a considerable amount to help residents to access the therapeutic care they need. In recent years we have also extended the use of this fund to cover the gap between Supporting People funding (which pays for general support and helping residents to become more independent) and Housing income (which pays for the provision of the building).

We aim to raise £10,000 per year to keep this restricted fund running. Many people owe their lives and relationships to this fund.

Phase IV Appeal:

Over the past 20 years or so, Tower Hamlets Mission has gradually been developing the site from the north end toward Mile End Road. Phase IV will be the last development on the site and the contemporary facilities will enable Tower Hamlets Mission to continue its work here for many years to come.

A simple 'overview' of the need for Phase IV is that we have too many clients needing flats and there are not enough flats. A growing number of clients need access to training, courses and voluntary work and we need facilities to help them to do this. And, despite our best efforts to maintain them, our existing administration offices, stores, workshop and other facilities have 'rising damp' to the ceilings and are gradually falling down. Our plan is to build an education centre, three further flats for Residents and re-furbish and damp proof one of the current the admin offices.

Those of you who have visited us will know that Tower Hamlets Mission os like an 'oasis' in the hustle and bustle of the East End - we wish to keep it that way and hopefully this is reflected in the design of Phase IV.

If you would like any more information about either of these appeals, please contact Stephen Holness on 020 7790 3040 or email at admin@towerhamletsmission.org.
